What is Functional Medicine

Zakia D. Bowen, MD  /  January 2, 2026

What Is Functional Medicine?

Functional medicine is the medicine you deserve.

Intuitively, you’ve always known it exists.

Functional medicine aims to improve healthcare by focusing on the root causes of illness rather than just treating symptoms. It asks why problems occur and seeks to prevent them before they arise.

Why We Need a New Approach

We are facing a health crisis. Six out of ten people live with at least one chronic disease; half have heart disease and nearly three quarters are overweight or obese. These numbers tell us that something in our current healthcare system is not working.

Our medical system does an excellent job with emergencies. If you break a bone or need urgent surgery, you will receive outstanding care. However, the approach that works well for acute care does not work as well for ongoing health problems like diabetes, autoimmune conditions, or heart disease. Such conditions progress gradually and necessitate distinct methods and strategies for effective prevention and management.

How Functional Medicine Works Differently

Functional medicine physicians spend time understanding your complete health picture. They examine your medical history, your lifestyle, your environment, and even your genetics to understand what might be causing health problems.

This approach combines the best of traditional medicine with evidence-based strategies for prevention. Your treatment plan might include conventional medications when needed, but it will also address nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress management, and other lifestyle factors that affect your health. Advanced laboratory testing can reveal imbalances before they become serious problems, allowing for early intervention.

An Expanded Vision of Healthcare

Functional medicine does not replace conventional medicine. Conventional care including primary care, emergency care, surgery, and specialty care remain essential and lifesaving. Instead, functional medicine expands what healthcare can offer by asking questions like: What is causing this problem? What obstacles are preventing health and healing? How can we restore balance and health?

This approach offers hope for anyone who has struggled with chronic health problems or felt that their concerns were not fully heard. By combining scientific knowledge with personalized care and a focus on prevention, functional medicine provides a path toward lasting health and vitality.

Functional medicine does not claim to have all the answers. It does represent a partnership between physician and patient, working together toward sustainable wellness.

The journey begins with a single question:

What would optimal health look like for you?
